This project organized by am Art Space and Department for Culture and Education of the German Consulate-General Shanghai (DcaE), artist for this year is Kai Tuchmann. Kai Tuchmann is a German Theatre maker. He studied Directing at the Drama School “Ernst Busch” in Berlin. Between 2003 and 2008 he worked at several theatres in German including Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin, Deutsches National Theater Weimar, and Stadttheater Brandenburg. Sponsored by Goethe-Institut, he worked in Northern Africa and the Middle East from 2008 to 2010.Tuchmann worked in Northern Africa and the Middle East. In Palestine he developed two plays: A Dream of the Wall, and Man without Music. In 2010 Tuchmann met the German Documentary Theatre maker Hans-Werner Kroesinger, whose analytical theatrical approaches and collective working methods had an enormous impact on him.Kai Tuchmann started 2012 to develop his own approach of Documentary Theatre as alternative historiography. The students of the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing, where Tuchmann taught in 2013, helped him further test out this approach. Also the encounters with Chinese intellectuals and artists such as Wen Hui, Zhao Chuan, Zhuang Jiayun, Li Yinan and Wu Wenguang were very influential to him.Being the residency artist of 2015 Residency Program in am Art Space, Kai Tuchmann will live and work in Shanghai for two months. He will continue to work with local artists for his further research on documentary theatre.
